چکیده

Couplings of forward osmosis (FO) with reverse (RO) or membrane distillation (MD) are investigated at the water-energy nexus. The treatment low and hypersaline feed solutions was assessed, followed by discussion most effective hybrid scheme for different conditions. Two FO configurations presented, suggesting potential applicability a versatile multi-stage approach treating low-saline wastewater sources under co-current module design. Subsequently, energy exergy consumption post-treatment RO / MD were evaluated. Finally, coupling units is investigated, highlighting dependence two systems upon operating parameters in FO. While FO-RO efficient solution terms power consumption, it narrowed choice salinity gradient draw solution. A 2 order magnitude higher required to drive back while saline wastewater. When dealing instead, FO-MD becomes more competitive, mostly from standpoint, ability use low-grade heat. Overall, versatile, showing broader application range potentially approaching zero liquid discharge. • desalination water Multi-stage operation valuable large-scale systems. ~100-fold energy-efficient than treatment. system flexible FO-RO, able work extended levels. comparable when hyper water.

Forward osmosis: Novel desalination of produced water and fracturing flowback

Treatment and reuse of oil and gas (O&G) production wastewater in a cost-effective and environmentally sound manner is critical for sustainable industrial development and for meeting stringent regulations. High salinity, free and emulsified hydrocarbons, silts and clays released from producing formations, and process additives common in O&G drilling wastewater render many conventional treatment...

The Energy-Water Nexus: An Analysis and Comparison of Various Configurations Integrating Desalination with Renewable Power

This investigation studies desalination powered by wind and solar energy, including a study of a configuration using PVT solar panels. First, a water treatment was developed to estimate the power requirement for brackish groundwater reverse-osmosis (BWRO) desalination. Next, an energy model was designed to (1) size a wind farm based on this power requirement and (2) size a solar farm to preheat...

Forward Osmosis in India: Status and Comparison with Other Desalination Technologies

With an increase in demand of freshwater and depleting water sources, it is imperative to switch to seawater as a regular source of water supply. However, due to the high total dissolved solid content, it has to be desalinated to make it drinkable. While desalination technologies have been used for many years, mass deployment of such technologies poses a number of challenges like high energy re...

Performance of Potassium Bicarbonate and Calcium Chloride Draw Solutions for Desalination of Saline Water Using Forward Osmosis

Forward osmosis (FO) has recently drawn attention as a promising membrane based method for seawater and brackish water desalination. In this study, we focus on the use of calciun chloride (CaCl2) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as inorganic salt draw solution candidates due to their appropriate performance in water flux and reverse salt diffusion as well as reasonable cost. The experiments we...

Efficiently Combining Water Reuse and Desalination through Forward Osmosis—Reverse Osmosis (FO-RO) Hybrids: A Critical Review

Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising membrane technology to combine seawater desalination and water reuse. More specifically, in a FO-reverse osmosis (RO) hybrid process, high quality water recovered from the wastewater stream is used to dilute seawater before RO treatment. As such, lower desalination energy needs and/or water augmentation can be obtained while delivering safe water for direct p...
